Adam Kalkin has made a career on his container based houses and as the name of this prefabricated offering indicates, this is another that utilises the concept to a huge extent. Unsurprisingly, there are twelve different containers featured in the design and all combine to create a summer home that is growing increasingly popular.

What is the design of the 12 Container House?

In simple terms, the 12 Container House is approximately 4000 square feet in size and is comprised of two stories. One of the big design elements of the house is the amount of transparency that has been implemented as even though it has made its name on containers, the house is still decorated heavily in glass which stretches from floor to ceiling on both the front and back. Another way to describe the house is as a T-shape, with a large front being supplemented by a narrow section that stems from the main bulk of the building. It is also worth mentioning at this point that most of the exterior of the building is constructed out of a steel frame. While some containers are prevalent on the ends of the design, most appear inside the building to create rooms.

In terms of the room design, the 12 Container House boasts a kitchen and living area on the ground floor. The whole design on this level is quite open plan, although the kitchen is set into a container, with a small breakfast bar in front of it. The next level of the building is joined by two staircases which stretch off from both sides of the ground floor. It's on this next floor where the bedrooms and bathrooms are located. They are inset into various containers and while this may not sound too glamorous in writing, it all provides for an extremely cosy environment.

One of the main reasons why Adam Kalkin has been at the centre of so much publicity over the years is due to his ability to bring innovative designs to the market at a very competitive cost. The 12 Container certainly builds on such success and the fact it costs just $125 per square foot means that it has been made into a very affordable solution.

While Adam Kalkin has forged a hugely successful career from his container prefabricated designs, there's no doubt that the 12 Container House takes the concept to a completely new level. The fact there are such a vast number of containers included in the design makes the whole building exceptionally unique, although perhaps the most impressive issue is that the containers don't overwhelm the overall image of the design. Instead, due to the amount of glass and the big steel frame, the building does not look ridiculous and doesn't overuse the containers at all. The same can be said for the interior of the building, where they are also positioned strategically.
